Beginning in ball-1, st st to join, st st across open end of ball-1 (catching both sides), join to ball-2 with st st and continue across ball, sl st to ball- 3 and continue across, sl st to ball-4 and continue across. FO (you need overlap the balls slightly as you go across, ball-1 is under ball-2, ball-2 is under ball-3 and ball-3 is under ball-4)

When both sides of the beard are finished sew to head. Ball-1 should sit about halfway up face and ball-4 should be at the bottom of the head. When both sides of the beard have been sewn on the two ball-4s will just meet under the chin area.
